My name is Alice Dosett.
Please do not let the name misguide you; I am a boy, not a girl.
I was eight years old when the course of my life began to change, unbeknownst to me, due to a simple trip to the carnival. I had caught someone's attention...
Not that I realized until several weeks later when I wandered away from yet another party my parents were hosting. I just wanted a few moments without my family's ever critical gaze, without worrying about being punished for the slightest imperfection.
I had just stepped foot into the nearby forest when I saw something, it looked to be the silhouette of a person.
I heard a laugh and swore it bid me to come closer and for some reason, and against my better judgment I did as requested. The moment I took a step towards it, it spun around and ran off! I could hear it laughing, as it quickly ran off leading me farther and farther away – not that I realized, it took all of my effort just to keep it in my sight.
"You're too slow~" the cheerful voice of the fleeing figure teased. "You will have to move a little faster if you want to catch up to me Aly dear."
‘How in heavens did it now the name I preferred to be called by?’ I gasped in surprise, and oh so gracefully, tripped over my own feet. "A-aly?"
The figure spun around, it's laughter danced in through the air around me. "Yes, Aly. Whatever is so surprising about that? Isn’t that the name you like to be called by?"
“Well, yes, it certainly is but-”
"But how did I know to call you by that name? It's very simple young Alice, I've been watching you for quite a while now. Truth be told, I am a bit upset you didn't notice me any sooner... now come along we're going to be much too late at this rate."
Without giving me even the slightest chance to respond, it turned away and began to run away from me once again.
I quickly picked myself up from the ground, and did my very best to try and catch up again. "Whatever are we going to be late too?" I called out.
"Just hurry up Alice. You shall see when we get there."
Being a child of aristocrats, running around was certainly not something I did often, most especially not in the fancy party clothes I was currently dressed in. Nevertheless I again did as instructed.
I'm unsure of how much time had passed by as I chased the figure. It could have been hours, or barely a few minutes; but before I knew it I could hear a familiar, beautiful, enchanting melody growing steadily louder with each step I took forward.
"We have arrived Aly."
My eyes widened in wonder as I looked around. It was the carnival from weeks past. No wonder the music had sounded so familiar! It was all there, the colorful tents all around, the games booths, the stalls full of toys and sweets, everything.
I jumped when I felt a hand on my shoulder. The voice of the figure I had been following whispered into my ear, "Go on and enjoy yourself Aly. I promise you, no one will ever, ever hurt you here."
I gasped, in my surprised stupor the figure I'd been chasing had managed to get so close without my knowledge. I turned quickly my mouth opening to speak, shocked at the words it had just spoken ‘for how could it know... no one knew, not a soul knew about that,’ but my words died on my lips upon finally seeing him. Yes, him - I should have realized the figure was a man from its voice alone, but the thought had never come to me during our chase in the forest
He had terribly pale skin that seemed to glow in the moon light, accenting his mesmerizing purple eyes. His hair, which was quite long for a boy, was a very light shade of purple almost looking to be the color of snow at first glance. A smile was on his lips, and his eyes were sparkling in amusement as he extended a white gloved hand. He easily took my own hand in his and slowly led me farther into the magical carnival grounds.
